Before a great looking site can be enjoyed it needs to be found. It won't be found unless there are specific pieces in the proper place and the pieces won't be in the correct place unless there is a strong, well designed and well implemented foundation.
A site can look great and still not help your business grow if the content doesn't take the customer from looking to liking. The content has to sell your product or service just as you would sell it if the customer came into your business. That means it has to be organized in a way that will take a potential customer that has no knowledge of your business through the site and teach them in a way that will make them want to become a customer. It also needs to take a potential customer that has knowledge and sell them your business as the one they want.
If I wanted to have a custom home built I don't think I would have my second cousin that just finished carpenter trade school do it for me. Just like I wouldn't have the kid down the block create a website for me. Yes, my cousin is talented at carpentry and the kid down the block won 4 awards for his artwork in school but each of them is only 1 piece of the overall structure we want created.
To create a total website package, there needs to be knowledge in computer programming, website design, web server functionality, marketing, advertising, search engine functionality, optimization and I haven't even started on everything it takes to make a site artful, pleasing to look at and the necessary skills to create content that will move a visitor from "Looking to Liking."
